Two drifters off to see the world
When I was eight years old, my brother left home to study English Literature at the University of Aberdeen. Two years later, my sister left to travel the world. She wouldn’t come home for five years. Being the youngest sibling, I have always looked up to my brother and sister and admired both of the paths they had chosen to take in life. I, myself, have always been a great lover of English, reading, writing and the constant validation of the education system. (How I miss that as an adult; now I just get my kicks from Instagram likes.) But I also wanted adventure outside of what I read about in books. I wanted to see and experience as much of the world as I possibly could and to make incredible memories like my sister had done before me. So, which path was I to follow? In the end, I decided to take both.
When I was eighteen years old, I left home and moved to London in order to study English and Drama at Queen Mary, University of London. I graduated in July 2016 and immediately set about pursuing my ambition of travel. Having always been a big lover of America but never having had the chance to go there, I booked a spontaneous Trek America trip a month before it was due to leave. A month later, I boarded my first long-haul flight and left Europe for the first time. It was on that trip that I was to meet my partner, Nick.
Trek America was one of the best experiences of my life. I road tripped from New York to LA and, completely unexpectedly, fell in love somewhere along the way. I came home from that trip not only with memories that I will cherish forever, but also having met the man who I knew I wanted to make all of my future memories alongside. (Not bad for a first trip away from home!) Like me, Nick was a huge lover of travel and, on top of this, he was the Head of English at a secondary school!
Over the course of the next couple of years, Nick and I travelled together to lots of new and different places. We saw in 2017 together in Brussels; I was surprised with a trip to Edinburgh for Easter weekend and a trip to Copenhagen, to visit The Little Mermaid statue, for my 23rd birthday. The summer after Trek America, we returned to the States; travelling to Florida in order to fulfil my lifelong dream of visiting Disney World, and we spent our first Christmas together travelling across Thailand. In the midst of this, we moved in together and I became an honorary northern girl living up in Leeds. But our biggest ambition was still to travel the world and so it wasn’t long before we made the decision to go for it.
Tomorrow morning, we will be leaving our lives in England behind and boarding a plane that will take us to Australia. Once there, we will be travelling across the country in a camper van. And from there? The sky’s the limit!
I have decided to keep this blog in order to document what I know will be one of the biggest adventures of our lives; as a way of keeping our friends and family updated on our travels; building a writing portfolio and compiling a collection of memories for us to look back on in the future.
I hope you enjoy coming along with us for the ride and sharing in the experiences we encounter along the way. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be starting this new and amazing, dream-come-true chapter of my life. But for now, I had better try to get some sleep; resting my head in England for the last time in a long while. Tomorrow is a big day.
